The City’s Community Arts and Culture Development Department has developed a digital tool in partnership with the City’s Information Systems and Technology Department, on which City artworks and heritage items can be recorded by City officials and viewed by the public.
The Digital Vault is an online tool that manages and showcases art and heritage objects owned by the City.
Each item features high-quality images, descriptions, and stories highlighting its significance. The platform also allows artists and the public to conveniently apply for a Public Art Permit, streamlining the process for applicants and City officials alike.
The Digital Vault includes an internal database for City officials to catalog art and heritage items, recording essential information like location, condition, and value for effective management and care.
The City of Cape Town’s diverse history is showcased through its collections, which feature an array of items including paintings, sculptures, memorials, murals, antique furniture, medals, Mayoral regalia, and other unique artefacts.
Many of these treasures are on display in public spaces, such as the Delville Wood Memorial in the Company’s Garden and the Civic Collection Exhibition at City Hall.
This exhibition highlights invaluable and irreplaceable movable heritage assets—historical, archaeological, scientific, and artistic—that narrate Cape Town’s rich history and development.
The Attic at City Hall continues to host this exhibition, managed by the Arts and Culture Development Branch.
‘The digital vault is an incredible resource, whether you are a student, a school learner, an academic researcher, an art lover or just a regular Capetonian curious about the rich history and stories of our city as expressed through art and collected items. As far as we know, this is the first such public-facing digital catalogue of art and heritage assets in South Africa, and we are very excited for people to start using it,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
The Vault can be accessed and explored by visiting www.capetown.gov.za/DigitalVault
