On Wednesday afternoon, Kloof Nek Road in Gardens was the scene of a significant collision involving a minibus taxi, a truck, and a sedan, which left four people injured and necessitated the rescue of both the taxi driver and a commuter trapped inside the vehicle.
The accident unfolded near Firdale Avenue, as emergency services responded promptly to the scene, working diligently to extricate those in need and provide medical attention to a total of eight individuals who were later transported to hospital with a range of injuries, some of which included head trauma.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the minibus taxi was in the process of overtaking a delivery scooter on a narrow road when the driver collided with the oncoming truck, as reported by News24.
Passengers in the taxi reported a terrifying moment just before the crash, suggesting that the vehicle’s brakes may have failed, leading to the driver losing control under traffic pressure.
‘The taxi attempted to pass both the scooter and the truck while another vehicle was approaching. There was no way to avoid the collision,’ one passenger recounted to News24, highlighting the chaotic circumstances that contributed to this latest incident.
This accident is just the latest in a troubling trend on Kloof Nek Road, a thoroughfare that has raised alarm among local residents and authorities alike due to the increasing frequency of similar incidents.
Just over a week ago, a tourist bus reportedly suffered brake failure on the same descent, colliding with several other vehicles as well as a MyCiTi bus stop.
Last month, The Democratic Alliance (DA) raised concerns over what it perceives as a lack of urgency in the investigation into the high-profile car crash involving Nigerian rapper 3GAR, who reportedly totalled his R3 million McLaren on High Level Road in Sea Point two months ago.
The case has drawn public attention, not only because of the celebrity status of the driver but also due to concerns over public safety in affluent Cape Town neighbourhoods.
DA member of the National Council of Provinces focusing on Security and Justice, Nicholas Gostell said that the Sea Point Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident. However, he noted with concern that weeks after the crash, no charges had been filed against the drive.
