Residents of Macassar are once again expressing concern over safety along Baden Powell Drive, after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered on Friday afternoon.
As reported by the Cape Argus, the woman’s body was found partially covered in sand by a passerby, sparking renewed fears about security in the area, where several bodies have reportedly been dumped over the years.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that police have registered a murder case and are currently conducting investigations.
‘Macassar police registered a murder case for investigation after the body of an unknown female was discovered by a passer-by in Baden Powell Drive Macassar, on Friday afternoon at about 2.50pm,’ he stated.
He added, ‘The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and arrests are yet to be made.’
At this stage, the victim’s identity remains unknown, and police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
Local community leader Christiaan Stewart voiced frustration over what he describes as a long-standing issue of neglect and poor safety infrastructure in the area.
‘Another body has been found along Macassar Road and Baden Powell Drive, this is a huge problem,’ he said. ‘I have sent an email to the City of Cape Town and the councillor about the lighting and they only send reference numbers but never fix the lights.’
Stewart further explained that residents have been calling for CCTV cameras along the road to deter criminal activity.
‘We requested for CCTV cameras along these roads because these bodies cannot be dumped like this, it is shocking,’ he said.
‘We had a meeting but received no proper answer from both SAPS and City regarding safety concerns.’
