The murder of South African football player, Senzo Meyiwa has garnered its fair share of attention, especially since the release of Netflix’s documentary titled Senzo: Murder of a soccer star.
Now, the case has taken a new twist as defence lawyer, Advocate Malesela Teffo, who represents some of the accused in the murder trial, was arrested in court immediately after the judge adjourned the matter on Thursday, reports IOL.
According to EWN, Teffo was arrested for failing to report to court following a trespassing charge laid in January 2022.
The Meyiwa murder trial has now been adjourned until the end of May.
Teffo’s very public arrest was made in front of journalists and videos have since been making the rounds on social media. When asked why he had been arrested, the defence lawyer pointed a finger at Police Minister Bheki Cele.
His arrest has been labelled as “intimidation tactics.”
The five men were identified as murdering Meyiwa in 2014 after they reportedly stormed into singer Kelly Khumalo’s home in an attempt to steal money and cellphones. Senzo was reportedly shot after a scuffle ensued.
Before the arrest, the court heard how former police bosses and political figures allegedly conspired with Khumalo’s family to stage the scene of Meyiwa’s murder.
The trial has been postponed until 30 May.
