Counterfeit goods with an estimated street value of about R55 million were seized in Bellville over the weekend, Cape {town} Etc reports.

On Sunday, 25 August, members of the Western Cape SAPS Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Team, Public Order Police, and Mobile Operations Unit under the guidance of counterparts from the National Head Office conducted a raid in the Bellville CBD.

Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie says members executed a search and seizure warrant at a certain premises, regarded as one of the biggest counterfeit and illicit goods distributors in the province.
There, they discovered counterfeit dupes of popular high-end brands, with an estimated street value of about R55 million.
‘Although no arrest was effected in this regard, we believe that significant inroads have been made in our fight to eradicate this global threat,’ says Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile, the provincial commissioner of the Western Cape.
All confiscated goods were transported to the Counterfeit Depot for safekeeping and disposal.
