The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the latest study indicates that a third dose of the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine is likely to help people with immunocompromised conditions (IC).
According to the CDC, immunodeficiency can be due to inherited genetic defects, which can also cause a weakened immune system and a weakened immune system can make one more susceptible to severe COVID-19.

News 24 reported that although those individuals that have IC only represented approximately 18% of the fully vaccinated population, however, the study has not yet been peer-reviewed the findings support that of other recent real-world studies indicating reduced vaccine protection for some IC patient groups.
” The study findings show that breakthrough infections are rare but are more common and severe in people with certain IC conditions,” as quoted by News 24.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s health department have also been advised by the Vaccine Ministerial Advisory Committee (VMAC) that citizens with IC could receive an additional vaccine dose.
South Africa has reported 146 new cases of COVID-19, nine deaths which brings the total to 88 934 deaths. The cumulative number of recoveries now stands at 2 811 928 with a recovery rate of 96,3%.
