While the Anti-Gang Unit has been doing some incredible work over the last few months, their good reputation may be marred after one of its detectives in Cape Town was caught requesting money for the release of a murder suspect, reports News24.
The 46-year-old detective has been released on bail after he was arrested on November 4. According to police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk, when the unit received information regarding the alleged incident, an undercover operation was held where he was provided with the money.
“He was arrested at Wynberg court after the money was found in his possession,” Van Wyk said.
The detective is being charged with a case of corruption and is set to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Despite this, the South African Police Service is doing its part to clean the streets. Police in the Western Cape are continuing their quest to confiscate illegal firearms in the province after they arrested several suspects over the weekend for being in the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
