Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue services have confirmed that they responded to a fire that broke out in the basement of St George’s Cathedral in the early hours of this morning. The fire caused no significant damage.
According to SABC, the Dean of the Cathedral, Reverend Michael Weeder, has alleged that the fire was deliberately started. In a statement, Reverend Weeder says their preliminary investigation found that a lit cotton ball was reportedly thrown through the barred window near the steps leading up to the Wale Street entrance to the Cathedral.
Weeder says due to the quick response of the fire and rescue team, no damage was done, but the basement and the Crypt were dense with smoke. Weeder goes on to say it was also reported to him that someone was seen running away from the Cathedral shortly after the fire started. A case has been registered with the police.
