The range of emergencies they handle is extensive, with vegetation fires, motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian incidents, and various types of residential fires predominantly contributing to the workload.

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, acknowledges the monumental effort required of the firefighters while also highlighting the critical role of support staff in these operations.
‘These statistics are staggering, but they also offer a clear view of the demands and pressures on the service. We are indebted to the frontline staff members, but also the support staff who are critical to the overall operations of the service,’ Smith remarked.
The City of Cape Town continues to invest heavily in the Fire and Rescue Service, ensuring that firefighters are equipped with the latest resources to manage these increasing demands.
The proposed capital budget for the 2026/27 financial year includes R20 million dedicated to upgrades at existing fire stations in Brooklyn, Mfuleni, and Constantia, as well as an initial R3 million investment in the construction of a new fire station in Langa.
As the city prepares for International Firefighters Day, anticipation is building for the celebrations that are set to take place.
On Saturday, 9 May 2026, the community is invited to join in festivities at the Wesfleur Sports Ground in Atlantis from 09:45 to 15:00, where exhibitions, live displays, sports, and games will bring the local fire service to life. The event will kick off with a cavalcade through the streets of Atlantis beginning at 08:30.
‘This event is not to be missed, so do diarise it and bring the whole family along for a glimpse into the fascinating world of the Fire and Rescue Service,’ Smith said.
