Two notorious gang members from Cape Town are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate Court on Tuesday, December 28, after they were arrested by Athlone police officers in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on Christmas day.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, police followed up on information received relating to a shooting incident that occurred earlier on Saturday.
“Upon their arrival at the address, the suspects dropped an object through the window in full view of the police members. The discarded firearm was retrieved and two suspects aged 21 and 25 were arrested and detained on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Swartbooi said.
Swartbooi further mentioned that officers attached to the Anti-Gang Unit also responded to information and searched premises in Wetton Road, Lavender Hill on Sunday, December 26.
“Upon arrival at the premises, they proceeded to a Wendy house and conducted a search where they confiscated a firearm. A 32-year-old man was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition,” Swartbooi said.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, an organised disruptive integrated operation in Hanover Park, led by the Anti-Gang Unit, resulted in the confiscation of three firearms, ammunition and a consignment of drugs.
Three males between the ages of 24 and 30 were arrested and detained on charges of possession of prohibited firearms, ammunition and drugs.
