Dr Ivan Meyer, the provincial Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, further confirmed that the Western Cape is set for another bumper summer tourism season in 2024.
As such, plenty of safe-guarding measures have been implemented during this tourist season, to ensure the safety of visitors and locals alike.
This includes a festive tourism safety operation which involves the deployment of 5000 personnel across the metro to fill lifeguarding positions and the likes as needed. Safety remains a top priority for the Western Cape Government. According to Meyer, the province is guided by the Provincial Tourism Safety Strategy and the coordination of activities between his department and other stakeholders involved in safety, disaster management and emergency services.
The Minister is particularly optimistic about the upcoming tourism season, given efforts by the Department of Home Affairs to make it easier for tourists from high-growth markets, such as China and India, to visit the country. The Western Cape is also well-placed to capitalise on the recent introduction of a digital nomad visa.
TimesLive has further reported that the tourism sector added an astounding R27.3 billion to the City’s gross value and further supported approximately 92 000 jobs last year alone.
