The “curse” of the Bella T superyacht may finally be broken after two decades of gathering dust and rust in a Cape Town harbour. A South African businessman has chosen to purchase the yacht and will restore it to its former glory before heading out to sea.
Bella T has had a less than glamourous life, unfortunately. The luxurious yacht was built in 1976 at the request of the famous American industrialist named Roy Carver and was originally designed by renowned naval architects, Arthur de Fever and Doug Shark. The industrialist put his millions to use by enlisting boatbuilders Maritima de Axpe in Bilbao, Spain, to construct a yacht that was originally based on de Fever and Sharp‘s design.
Despite years of back and forth, and countless legal woes, the Bella T was finally ordered to go on public auction by the Western Cape High Court in November 2021. Fortunately, Bella T never made it to the auction but was instead snagged by a businessman before the scheduled auction date of 1 March.
While all parties involved are tight-lipped about how much was paid, Business Insider is claiming that the vessel may have had a price tag of around €835,000, or R14 million.
However, it’s the happy ending that the neglected yacht will receive that has our hearts brimming. According to Solution Strategists, the firm charged with handling the auction, the new owner is looking to finish all the neglected work that has left her dull and grey, so they may set sail towards the sunset.
Now, that’s a fairytale ending.
