President Cyril Ramaphosa is on bed rest with a common cold. Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu confirmed the president is ‘too sick’ to carry out his duties, and has had to miss meetings as a result.

Ramaphosa was scheduled to meet with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) on Monday [September 21] to address their demands for worker safety and salary guarantees. His acting spokesperson Tyrone Seale told TimesLIVE that Ramaphosa is recovering from a common cold.

Speaking to media on Monday afternoon, Mthembu suggested the President should be fine in a few days and will continue his duties on Wednesday [September 23].

“The only person who can deal with these issues properly and listen to what Nehawu has to say is our president and he is available to meet them on Wednesday, because today he is really sick. He is in the blankets as we speak,” he said.
