Despite an unexpected halt, contractor change and recent inclement weather, the City of Cape Town said it remains hopeful that the long-term upgrade project along Sea Pont, Mouille Point and Granger Bay will reach completion in December 2024.
This comes as the Sea Point Promenade rehabilitation project’s new contractor began work on 22 May after it came to a standstill in February due to a slow work rate that subsequently pushed the initial completion date of June back by six months.

Deputy Mayor and MMC for Spacial Planning and Environment Eddie Andrews confirmed that the upgrade should be completed by December, should all go according to plan, according to IOL.
‘Over the next six months, the contractor will prioritise the work according to their programme and we can confirm that, currently, all is on track to complete the project within the time frame,’ the publication quoted Andrews as saying.
Upon recommencing the much-anticipated R41 million upgrade project, Andrews noted that the amended timeline did not result in any funds lost.
‘With the amended timeline with funds not being lost, it remains in the City’s coffers with the appointment of the new contractor, we will pay the contractor who will commence with the following works,’ said Andrews.
‘Encasement of a wall, encasement of the stormwater pipe, concrete works which includes the staircases which will be the priority before the end of the financial year.’
The Sea Point Promenade and Granger Bay Parking Area Project include the following scheduled tasks:
• Upgrading of Granger Bay parking area
• Construction of a rock revetment
• New Fort Road play park
• Additional walkways
• Additional coastal vegetation and lawn planting
