Well known Afrikaans singers along with Democratic Alliance members took to protest and perform in Paarl today, May 28, in demand that the word Afrikaans not be removed from the Taal Monument in the #WysjouTaal concert protest.
The DA called on Minister Nathi Mthethwa to leave the management of the Afrikaanse Taalmonument to the DA.
“The DA called on ANC Minister Nathi Mthethwa to hand over management of the Afrikaanse Taalmonument to the DA-controlled Western Cape rather than changing the Monument’s name,” said the DA in a statement.
The monument, built in 1975 was created to honour the language of Afrikaans, but the removal of the Afrikaans word is being perceived by protestors as a removal of their heritage. The DA has called the ANC’s plan “insane” and stated that they will not rest until it has been repelled.
A petition is also circulating, entitled “Petisie om die Afrikaanse Taalmonument se naam te behou!” which at the time of this article’s writing has 9838 signatures.
