Acclaimed filmmaker and YouTube creator Dan Mace has never shied away from telling bold stories, but his latest project could be his most dangerous yet, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Mace’s new documentary takes viewers deep into Cape Town’s deadly taxi wars, unmasking one of South Africa’s most volatile transport systems. Known for its deadly turf battles and complex power dynamics, the city’s minibus taxi industry is thrust into the spotlight through Mace’s fearless lens.
‘This isn’t just a story – it’s a war zone with routes, rifles, and rivalries. We filmed in places most wouldn’t dare go,’ says Mace, who founded the production company JOE Films.

In the film, Mace navigates both sides of the divide: the official corridors of law enforcement and the often lawless frontlines of the taxi industry. What emerges is a tense, urgent narrative that challenges perceptions and exposes the brutal undercurrent of Cape Town’s public transport reality.
With gritty verité footage, rare on-the-ground access, and raw interviews with those entrenched in the conflict, the film paints an unflinching portrait of life on South Africa’s streets – where every route can mean survival, control, or violence.
More than just a documentary, Mace’s work delivers investigative storytelling at its most visceral, leaving audiences breathless and questioning who really holds the power on the nation’s roads.
