Daphney Manamela has accused senior police figures of taking a R5 million bribe, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The bribe was allegedly made to block her return and stop the reopening of the 2009 Jimmy Mohlala murder case, which she links to Mbombela Stadium corruption.
According to SABC News, suspended Mpumalanga police commissioner made the claim during a media briefing in Mbombela on Sunday.
She also alleged interference by former police minister Bheki Cele and said she was targeted for acting against corruption.
SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the service would consult Manamela and its legal team before moving ahead.
‘We will consult the general,’ she said, adding that police needed to get ‘the details’ first.
Mathe also said the claims were ‘serious allegations that cannot be taken lightly and ignored’, and that SAPS would use formal processes and, where needed, independent oversight bodies.
TimesLIVE reported that Manamela’s latest remarks follow a long-running legal and disciplinary dispute.
The report said she was suspended in February 2023 and that she later won a high court challenge and faced a further suspension after new complaints surfaced.
Her allegations now place pressure on SAPS as it prepares its next steps.
