A quiet, emotional tribute marked what would have been Darren Scott’s 62nd birthday, as his former wife, Sarah-Kate Accetta, shared a deeply personal message reflecting on life, loss and a legacy that still echoes through their family.
Posting on Facebook on Monday, 26 January, Accetta opened a window into how the family continues to honour the late radio icon months after his death in May 2025, following a long and public battle with cancer. Rather than a grand gesture, the day was marked by a simple ritual, baking Scott’s favourite cake, fondly known in their home as the ‘strawberry hamburger’.
In her message, Accetta described Scott as a rare presence in South African media, someone whose talent stretched effortlessly across radio, television, sport, news and music. She wrote that even among the country’s most respected broadcasters, Scott stood apart, both professionally and personally.
She reflected on his approach to work, saying broadcasting was never something he merely did for a living. According to Accetta, Scott lived his passion fully, driven by curiosity, energy and a distinctive on-air style that became his signature.
Much of her tribute focused on the couple’s two sons, Mark and Matthew, whom she described as living reminders of their father. Accetta shared that their eldest son, Mark, is now studying sports broadcasting at school, a path she believes would have filled Scott with pride. She recalled how Scott often brought Mark into the studio for name reads and adverts, planting early seeds of a shared love for the industry.
She also wrote tenderly about their younger son, Matthew, saying his playful smile and unmistakable sparkle mirror his father’s. During sporting moments, Matthew looks up and makes a small, private gesture, one Accetta says is meant only for Darren.
Scott passed away in May 2025 after being diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma, an illness he faced for several years. Though his voice is no longer on air, his influence, Accetta suggested, continues to live on, in memories, in moments, and in the lives of those who knew him best.
