On Wednesday, 30 March, the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s motion of no confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet was defeated in National Assembly.
According to News24, this was the first time that a motion such as this had been brought before the Assembly, as well as the utilisation of the roll-call voting system.
In total, 131 MPs voted in favour of the motion while 231 voted against, with the final decision coming after nearly two and a half hours of deliberation. As a result, the motion was, therefore, not agreed to.
Opposition parties such as the IFP, GOOD, the NFP, AIC and Al Jama-ah did not support the motion, standing alongside the ANC.
The DA, EFF, FF Plus, ACDP, UDM and ATM supported the motion, while COPE’s Willie Madisha abstained, and the PAC was absent.
However, another motion has been referred by the African Transformation Movement to the programming committee on Thursday, but it has stated that it wants a secret ballot.
It has since approached the High Court in the Western Cape early this week seeking an urgent application which will be heard in a normal court, as per IOL.
Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula stated that the next steps would be discussed on Thursday:
“Parties having made their comments, I highly appreciate that and thank you very much honourable members. I now rule that we are not proceeding with this matter and the details of what we do next will be dealt with at the programming committee tomorrow, I thank you.”
