A routine shopping trip in Cape Town turned into a terrifying ordeal after a man was arrested for allegedly trying to snatch a young child in broad daylight, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The incident unfolded at around 10:30am on Saturday, 13 December 2025, inside Vangate Mall in Athlone, where a five-year-old girl was walking hand-in-hand with her mother.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk said the calm moment was shattered when an unknown man suddenly approached and attempted to pull the child away from her mother’s grip. The mother resisted, resulting in a brief but intense struggle as she refused to let go of her daughter.
The situation was brought under control when the child’s father intervened, confronting the suspect and preventing the attempted abduction from continuing.
The suspect, identified as a 30-year-old man, was later taken to a nearby hospital under police guard to receive medical attention. Authorities have not confirmed how he sustained his injuries or whether they were caused during the intervention.
Van Wyk confirmed that the parents and their daughter were assisted at the Athlone Victim Support room, where they received counselling following the traumatic event. A case of attempted kidnapping has since been formally opened as investigations continue.
