Police in the Cape Winelands are grappling with the heart-wrenching circumstances surrounding the tragic death of an eight-year-old boy at Klapmuts Primary School.
Matthew Cheswin Baartman, a grade three learner, passed away following an incident on Friday morning, and authorities are now striving to determine the cause of this untimely loss.
The unsettling incident was reported at approximately 07:45am on 23 January 2026. Matthew was immediately taken to a medical facility after the event, where he was sadly declared deceased.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that an inquest has been registered, allowing for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the young boy’s death, as per Daily Voice.
As speculation swirls around potential causes, including allegations concerning electricity connections, Provincial MEC for Education David Maynier has urged the public to refrain from jumping to conclusions.
He stated, ‘We have noted social media speculation that an electricity connection was involved; however, this has not been confirmed, and the cause of death has not yet been determined,’ as quoted on Smile FM News.
Maynier reiterated the commitment to supporting both the school community and the investigation, asserting that accountability and transparency remain paramount.
In the wake of this tragedy, Klapmuts Primary School’s principal, Lee Hoffman, expressed deep sorrow over Matthew’s passing.
‘On behalf of the management, staff, and entire school community, we would like to extend our sincere, deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Matthew’s parents, family, loved ones, classmates and friends,’ Hoffman said.
He further appealed for respect and compassion towards the grieving family and urged the community to avoid the circulation of unverified information, which not only causes harm but undermines the dignity of those mourning.
The investigation into the incident is being conducted by various stakeholders, including the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) and local authorities.
Hoffman stressed the importance of allowing investigators to carry out their duties without interference, as the focus should remain on supporting one another during this devastating time.
The tragedy has sparked considerable unrest within the community, with many parents expressing fears over school safety. GOOD Party Councillor Marius van Stade visited Klapmuts Primary School to lend support, noting the justified anger and concerns shared by parents.
He announced that the party plans to engage with key political figures, including the Premier of the Western Cape and the Education Minister, to demand a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of Matthew’s death.
