The gruesome discovery of a decomposing body was made by a passer-by on their morning walk along the shoreline of Misty Cliffs, near Scarborough yesterday, November 19.

Initial reports by Wayne Dyason, City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Inspector, stipulated that no body was found along the beach. Later, however, he released a statement saying that a body, which was ‘extremely decomposed’, was found at Misty Cliffs at roughly 2:30pm.

In a statement, South African Police Station (SAPS) spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said that Ocean View officers were alerted to the finding by a passer-by who was walking their dog on the beach.

“On the members arrival on the scene they found the passer-by who showed them where the body was laying. The body was dressed in a black wetsuit with flippers and was in an advanced state of decomposing. The body was that of a male, where the age and race unknown,” Van Wyk said. “The body was certified by Cape Medical Response and removed to a nearby mortuary. An inquest case was opened for investigation.”
