A Delft community remains reeling after the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Shime Plaatjies, who was killed in her sleep last month, leaving a young child to face a world without her mother.
The attack occurred on 5 October at a home on Tamla Street in Voorbrug, where Plaatjies was staying with a friend. She was struck three times and succumbed to her injuries two days later, sparking shock and grief across her circle of friends and family, as reported by the Daily Voice.
Authorities have linked the shooting to gang activity, with alleged Hard Livings members reportedly targeting the residence in retaliation for a turf-related incident involving one of Plaatjies’s friends. ‘She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,’ a close friend, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained to the Daily Voice.
The aftermath has been particularly harrowing for Plaatjies’s young daughter, who has only just begun to comprehend the permanent loss of her mother. ‘She says, ‘Shime got her wings now,’’ the friend shared.
Police have acted swiftly against the suspect. Kyle Jacobs, 21, who is alleged to have carried out the attack, appeared in the Bellville Magistrates Court this week, where bail was denied. The case, investigated by the Anti-Gang Unit, also involves charges of attempted murder for a second adult and a three-year-old child who were wounded in the shooting. Jacobs is scheduled to return to court on 24 November.
Friends and family have expressed frustration over the slow flow of information from law enforcement in the weeks following Plaatjies’s death, stating that updates only came after they personally followed up on the investigation. Despite the grief, there is a sense of relief knowing that the alleged perpetrator will remain in custody. ‘It won’t bring Shime back, but at least another life may be saved,’ the friend said.
The tragedy underscores the persistent threat of gang violence in Delft and the devastating impact it has on innocent residents, particularly young families. Authorities continue to appeal for witnesses and any information that could support the ongoing investigation.
