The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced that it had overstated the petrol price adjustment that came into effect on Wednesday by 6 cents.
Initially, it was announced that the price of petrol for 93 and 95 ULP and LRP will increase by 81 cents per litre, but the correct petrol price adjustment was actually an increase of 75 cents per litre.
“The 6 cents difference is due to the fact that the adjustment of wages for service station workers had already been implemented in September 2021. Although it is for the very first time that such an error has occurred in the history of basic fuel price determination in South Africa, the DMRE profusely apologises for the inconvenience caused. The rest of the fuel prices are correct,” the department said.
The department went on to say that the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin has increased by 42c per litre, while the maximum retail price for illuminating paraffin has increased by 56c per litre. The retail price for gas also increased by R1.83 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has written to Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana, calling for a halt to the annual increase in the fuel levies.

According to OUTA’s CEO, Wayne Duvenage, South Africans can no longer afford to burden society with higher taxes and levies applied to the price of fuel.
“We have witnessed substantial increases to the price of petrol and diesel, as a result of ongoing above-inflation increases to the basket of 12 other levies and charges, which have collectively increased by over 125% over the past decade.
“At an average of 8.5% per annum, these increases have been well above inflation and the result is a compounding effect that makes the collective cost of levies and surcharges more than R10.00 per litre of petrol, before one drop of the basic fuel price is added,” Duvenage explained.
