Last week, Michael Thurley, the chief operating officer at Educor explained that registration had been fully restored after the institution was banned in March when they failed to provide tax clearance certificates and annual financial statements for the 2021 and 2022 years as evidence of their financial stability, Cape {town} Etc reports.

However, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has clarified that it has not fully reinstated the registration of Educor.
The DHET emphasised that Educor’s registration remains provisional and is subject to certain conditions.
‘Educor’s statement fails to accurately represent the nature of their reinstatement,’ the department stated.
The DHET confirmed that while a meeting occurred with Educor at the end of September, its purpose was to discuss the group’s provisional reinstatement, which includes submitting regular reports for six months – a critical condition for maintaining this status.
The department’s statement pointed out significant omissions in Educor’s communications.
The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, provisionally reinstated Educor’s registration based on humanitarian considerations to mitigate disruptions for current students, who have faced challenges such as abrupt campus closures and unresolved staff pay issues.
As first reported by News24, this provisional status does not reduce the regulatory responsibilities of the DHET. The department retains the authority to revoke the provisional reinstatement if Educor does not adhere to the stipulated conditions.
Educor, which comprises several private colleges including City Varsity, ICESA City Campus, Lyceum College and Damelin, was previously deregistered by former Minister Blade Nzimande in March due to serious operational issues, including the grading of students based on unmarked scripts.
The recent provisional reinstatement aims to support the educational continuity of currently enrolled students while maintaining necessary oversight.
