The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has reported a sharp rise in the number of South Africans logging their details on the Travel Smart system, as tensions continue in the Middle East, Cape {town} Etc reports.
As of 4 March 2026, more than 6,400 South African citizens in the region have formally registered their presence, a move the department views as a critical step in monitoring and assisting nationals during the ongoing interstate conflict.
Authorities are urging South Africans currently in affected cities and countries for non-essential travel to begin preparations to leave through official evacuation channels. The department stressed that registering and coordinating through proper processes is vital to ensure that departures from high-risk areas can be arranged swiftly once safe passage is secured.
DIRCO has also noted that several airlines have restarted limited commercial flights from parts of the region. Citizens are being strongly encouraged to make immediate use of these available flights, as further heavy attacks are anticipated in the coming days. The department emphasised that safeguarding the wellbeing of South Africans abroad remains its top priority.
At the same time, South Africans are being advised against undertaking any non-essential travel to the Middle East until conditions stabilise.
Those facing obstacles in their attempts to leave, or who require urgent consular assistance, have been instructed to contact the relevant officials without delay.
