The Parow Regional Court handed down a 25-year sentence to Cevyn Kemp after he pleaded guilty to the killings of three family members, reports Cape {town} Etc.
In a case that has shocked the Bishop Lavis community, Kemp’s actions stemmed from a dispute over his brother’s poor academic performance that escalated into a fatal escalation of domestic violence.
On 14 December 2022, a sequence of events unfolded at 18 Martin Lane, where Kemp confronted his younger brother, Peter, about his poor academic performance.
Following a heated argument, during which Peter reportedly attacked Kemp, he grabbed a brick that was serving as a door stop and struck Peter multiple times on the head, ultimately causing his death due to severe blunt force trauma.
The incident did not end there. Shortly after, Kemp’s mother, Elmoline Kemp, returned home from work in search of her son. Upon discovering his lifeless body, a panicked Kemp reacted violently, again wielding the same brick against his mother. Despite her pleas, he assaulted her as well, resulting in her death.
The violence continued when Kemp’s aunt, Shireen Isaacs, arrived at the residence, seeking information on her family.
After being misled regarding their whereabouts, she ventured into the house and encountered the aftermath of the killings. Kemp then attacked her as well with the same weapon, sealing his horrific course of violence.
According to evidence presented in court, Kemp attempted to conceal the consequences of his actions. The day following the murders, he visited a friend and confessed that there had been a serious incident at home.
Alarmed, his friend and her father accompanied him back to the house, where the lifeless bodies were discovered in the yard, prompting an immediate police response.
Kemp was arrested and charged under the Domestic Violence Act after police found inconsistencies in his initial narrative during a psychological evaluation. A confession ultimately followed, where he recounted the brutal details of the crimes.
While the prosecutor, Earl Edward Koopman, sought a life sentence for the accused, the court considered mitigating factors such as Kemp’s expressed remorse and decision to plead guilty on his first court appearance.
In light of the grievous nature of the acts committed, the court ultimately sentenced Kemp to 25 years for each count of murder, with the sentences to run concurrently, alongside a declaration of unfitness to possess a firearm.
