A runaway blaze sparked by a flare set off on New Year’s Eve has left the Overberg area devastated. Families in Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay were forced to evacuate as a precautionary measure, as strong winds fanned the fire and reignited it after it had been brought under control.

The fire, which started in the early hours of Wednesday morning, has already claimed the life of one, and left two seriously injured. One other victim sustained minor injuries.

Residents were evacuated in the early hours of Thursday morning, where they were guided to Crassula Hall in the centre of Betty’s Bay.

Speaking to IOL, chairperson of the standing committee on local government, Masizole Mnqasela said: “Our prayers are with the family of the deceased and the fire victims who have suffered terrible burns. We also pray for our firemen and all men in uniform, volunteers and members of the affected communities.”

He added that donations such as food and medical supplies are still needed for the firefighters who are battling the blaze.

Donations can be dropped off directly at Crassula Hall in Betty’s Bay, and the Hermanus Community Policing Forum will accept donations on a 24-hour basis at the Hermanus Fire and Rescue and Disaster Management offices in 14 Mussel Road, Hermanus Industrial Area.

Donations may also be made to the Overstrand Municipality Executive Mayor’s Special Fund to assist the Betty’s Bay, Hangklip, Pringle Bay and Rooiels areas.
