A driver has been arrested for recklessly transporting schoolchildren in a trailer, prompting the Western Cape Government to reinforce road safety measures, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The footage, which sparked outrage among parents and the local community alike, prompted an immediate investigation leading to the arrest of the driver for reckless and negligent driving, as well as endangering the lives of vulnerable young passengers.
Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku praised the decisive action taken by law enforcement and expressed his deep concern over the blatant disregard for safety displayed in the incident.
‘It is deeply concerning that any driver would think it is acceptable to transport children in such unsafe conditions. Our law enforcement officers acted decisively, and we commend them for ensuring accountability,’ he stated.
Sileku underscored the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations outlined in the National Land Transport Act.
He reminded the public that all operators transporting learners are required to possess a valid operating licence, ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, and have the necessary permits for transporting schoolchildren.
‘Scholar transport must always comply with safety regulations to protect the most vulnerable road users,’ Sileku emphasised.
He also called upon parents and caregivers to join the government’s efforts in safeguarding schoolchildren on the roads. This includes taking practical steps to ensure that any private transport operators used for their children are using safe and reliable vehicles.
‘Parents must ensure that drivers have legal authorisation to transport learners,’ he urged.
Sileku said they are committed to enforcing road safety laws and protecting all road users, especially young learners who rely on this form of transport to travel to and from school.
‘A safe environment for our learners, both in school and on their journey, is our priority,’ Sileku concluded.
