A smash-and-grab operation in Elsies River has led to five arrests after CCTV, intelligence and a City drone helped officers track suspects during a joint operation, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The arrests followed several smash-and-grab incidents reported in the area over recent weeks. Intelligence teams reviewed available information and CCTV footage to identify and profile those linked to the incidents.
Drone tracks suspect during 20-minute chase
The South African Police Service (SAPS), City Law Enforcement, Metro Police and investigators then worked together to execute the operation.
According to Arrive Alive, the City’s drone team provided aerial surveillance while officers moved in on the suspects. When one suspect ran from officers, the drone maintained visual contact and helped guide officers on the ground during a 20-minute foot pursuit.

Footage of the operation has been shared online, giving residents a glimpse of the aerial technology used during the pursuit.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith welcomed the arrests, saying: ‘I want to commend SAPS and City enforcement agencies for making progress on this matter by securing these arrests.’
