In a dramatic incident on Sunday, November 24, traffic officers in Eerste River apprehended four suspects involved in a spree of robberies. The suspects were spotted in a white vehicle, and one occupant was seen robbing a woman of her cellphone. Officers pursued and intercepted the car, arresting three men and one woman. The suspects were found with three cellphones, a wallet, and cash, all linked to other robberies in the area.
The male suspects are now in custody at Kleinvlei police station, while the woman was transferred to Mfuleni SAPS. They face charges of robbery and possession of stolen goods.
‘I commend our officers for their situational awareness and stopping this group in their tracks,’ said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for Safety and Security. ‘As we count down to the festive season, I want to remind the public that criminals exploit this time of year for their own shopping sprees. Please be vigilant about your physical and online safety. Keep valuables out of sight and stay alert when shopping or out and about.’
Drunk driving arrests soar
Traffic and Metro Police officers arrested 105 individuals for drunk driving over the past week—more than triple the 27 arrests from the previous week.
‘We’re off to a boozy start, and this does not bode well for the weeks ahead,’ said Smith. ‘At best, you will be arrested, spend time in jail, and have a criminal record. Our accident statistics speak for themselves. This is not the gift you want to give yourself or your loved ones, so don’t drink and drive.’
Emergency calls highlight concerns
The City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 823 incidents over the weekend, including 119 cases of assault, 424 medical emergencies, 231 noise complaints, 87 domestic violence cases, and 60 vehicle or pedestrian accidents.
‘Domestic violence calls have spiked from 48 the previous weekend to 87, which is deeply concerning,’ Smith noted. ‘As we approach a time of heightened focus on gender-based violence, I encourage communities to stand together against the attacks on our women and children.’
Drug busts and by-law enforcement
Metro Police officers arrested 93 suspects this past week and seized significant amounts of drugs, including 105 bundles of khat and 25 packets of Tik. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers made 138 arrests and issued 6,805 notices for various by-law infringements.
In one incident on Friday, November 22, officers stopped a vehicle in Plantation Road, Wetton, and discovered the occupants in possession of railway overhead cables. The suspects, unable to account for the items, were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property.
Residents are reminded to report criminal activities or emergencies by contacting the PECC at 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
