In a shocking incident that has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding road safety, a 25-year-old driver was arrested after crashing his Porsche Taycan into a traffic vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The dramatic events unfolded on Saturday, 8 November, and have drawn attention to the recklessness of some supercar owners on South African roads.
At approximately 6:42am, a Traffic Officer on patrol along FW De Klerk Boulevard noticed the Porsche speeding aggressively behind him.
The officer attempted to change lanes to allow the vehicle to pass, but the driver clipped the police vehicle before fleeing the scene. What ensued was a high-speed chase, which ultimately led the officer to stop the speeding vehicle in the vicinity of Century City.
A breathalyser test revealed that the driver was nearly three times over the legal limit. He was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offences, including driving under the influence, reckless and negligent driving, fleeing an accident scene, failing to comply with a lawful instruction, and damage to council property.
The Porsche Taycan, valued at a significant sum, was impounded in accordance with the city’s traffic bylaw.
In a dramatic twist, the driver had called a friend, also 25 years old, to the scene, only for law enforcement to discover that this individual was also driving under the influence. Both men now face serious legal repercussions for their actions following this reckless episode.

Alderman JP Smith, the mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, commented on the incident, stating, ‘This is a near carbon copy of an incident in May, where a yellow Porsche also caused a collision along that same stretch of road. The audacity in this case was at an all-time high, and just more proof that some supercar drivers are among our most problematic categories of road users. I want to commend the officers involved for their perseverance in catching the suspect, but also being alert to his equally inebriated friend. May the criminal justice system dish up the appropriate punishment.’
The arrests made during this incident were part of broader enforcement efforts by the City’s traffic and law enforcement services.
In the past week alone, they made 291 arrests, with 34 of those arrests attributed to traffic enforcement, including 27 for driving under the influence.
The traffic authorities also recorded over 63 000 offences, impounded 202 public transport vehicles, and executed over 2 200 warrants of arrest.
The metro police were not far behind in their efforts, announcing 170 arrests and issuing more than 7 400 notices for a range of bylaw and traffic infringements. In particular, 87 arrests were made by metro officers, with 20 specifically for driving under the influence.
