Captain Marchell Rhode, Durbanville police spokesperson, says the department is aware of robberies and attacks on those who walk home near Morningstar and Wellway Park. ‘We are monitoring the situation and will put measures in place. We urge people not to walk late at night from the pubs or down the main roads in Morningstar, especially during load shedding.’
The Northern News reports that Morningstar’s neighbourhood watch had to assist two men who were robbed in the area during loadshedding on 23 May. ‘I was at my house at the time when my husband and I heard someone screaming for help,’ says Rita Manuel, a member of the neighbourhood watch group. ‘We rushed outside and saw two guys in the street; one was lying in the road and the other was screaming for help. A lot of the neighbours came outside to help them.’
She added that one of the men was badly beaten, and both were robbed of their cell phones and wallets.
The pair had been walking home from a pub in Durbanville when they were attacked and allegedly assaulted on Langeberg Road.
