The 1st Durbanville Scout Group is part of the Kanonkop District in Cape Town that’s been helping to develop young people socially, get them involved in the community, and teach them many life and leadership skills for more than 50 years.
This strong group has been trying to help the youth in the community to be the best they can be, by providing unique facilities, experiences, and opportunities. They have also been enabling youth to give back to their community, both in tangible and intangible ways.
In fact, three scouts at the troop recently earned the prestigious Springbok Award, which is the highest advancement a South African scout can attain.
The group has started a petition against the City of Cape Town after explaining that for the past 58 years, they have leased a property from the City from which they could provide services to the youth, but towards the end of 2020, they were informed that the City reportedly intends to dispose of the property before end-2022. They call this property their ‘home’.
“All the improvements [and] renovations we had done at the property over more than half a century for the use of not only our own scouts, but also other scout groups within the Western Cape, will be lost and destroyed. And all the efforts [and] memories of thousands of children and adults that experienced scouting and became citizens that had positive impacts on society, will be lost,” the group explains.
