Friends and neighbours say the incident shows how dangerous poor road surfaces can be for riders and pedestrians. Many potholes in the area have gone unrepaired for months, leaving road users at risk. Road safety groups say reporting hazards to the municipality is important to get action.
National pothole initiatives highlight that unfilled holes cause accidents across South Africa and drivers should pull over safely if they feel a vehicle shaking. Authorities in other cities have set up reporting hotlines to speed up repairs (Fix Local).
Community members are asking motorists to slow down and watch out for cyclists and scooter riders. They say better maintenance is needed before more people are hurt.
