Didi, the Chinese e-hailing service that launched in South Africa just last year has cancelled its trips – permanently.
Didi was seen as something of a promising newcomer on the e-hailing block, set to compete with Uber and Bolt.
The decision to end its operations in Mzansi came late last week on April 8, as a Didi official confirmed to TechCrunch.
Although the e-hailing service did not disclose its exact reason for travelling in a different direction beyond hinting at re-evaluating other existing markets, some suspect that the closure of its SA movements comes after another jam of strikes this Autumn. Recent e-hailing related strikes saw drivers in South Africa protest in light of sky-high petrol prices and how their contract companies were navigating the petrol blues.
Protesting drivers included those for Uber and Bolt too who expressed that they were no longer making money, as BusinessTech reports, due to high commissions and fare increase disputes.
Meanwhile, Bolt continues to find itself in hot water following more and more allegations from local women against its drivers. Recently, another attack has gone viral on social media after a young woman claimed that she was slapped and punched in the face by a driver.
