A beloved staple of celebrity television is finally calling it quits – again.
After captivating pop culture junkies for over three decades, E! News is officially shutting down production, with the final episode scheduled to air on 25 September, as reported by USA Today.
The move comes as part of a wider strategy by the E! Network to lean fully into its booming digital content arm.
Insiders revealed that staff were informed of the decision on 24 July, just hours before the network aired a repeat episode. Despite a short-lived comeback in late 2022, the show couldn’t keep up with the network’s growing digital ambitions, where real-time content and mobile consumption now dominate the landscape.
The decision marks the second time the show has been pulled from air. It previously went dark in March 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic brought in-studio filming to a halt.
Its 2022 reboot, which shifted E! News into a late-night slot co-hosted by Adrienne Bailon-Houghton and Justin Sylvester, aimed to breathe life back into the format, but the show ultimately couldn’t keep pace with its online counterparts.
As of mid-2025, E!’s digital platforms recorded over 7 billion video views and a staggering 87 million social media followers, numbers that far outweigh the show’s traditional TV viewership. While the network’s linear audience dwindles, its red-hot social content continues to rake in global engagement.
Some staff members may find new roles at NBCUniversal’s spin-off media arm, Versant, though exact placements remain unclear.
Meanwhile, E! will keep its non-news offerings alive, from surgical shockers in Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind to new reality entries like Kimora: Back in the Fab Lane.
E! News first hit screens in 1991 with Dagny Hultgreen at the helm and went on to feature a revolving door of pop culture icons, including Ryan Seacrest, Giuliana Rancic, Terrence Jenkins, Maria Menounos and Jason Kennedy.
The show’s legacy also includes countless red-carpet interviews and tabloid-worthy scoops that helped shape the way Hollywood was covered on screen.
The network has no plans to abandon its glamorous award show specials either. Live from E! will continue to be part of E!’s seasonal coverage, though former host Laverne Cox stepped down in January.
As the final credits roll, fans say goodbye to a trailblazer in celebrity journalism, one that defined an era but couldn’t outpace the swipe-and-scroll generation.
