Firefighters were dispatched to the Masiphumelele informal settlement in the early hours of Sunday morning after a fire broke out and spread into nearby vegetation, reports Cape {town}Etc.
Emergency crews from the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly, deploying multiple resources to bring the blaze under control before dawn.
Authorities confirmed that the fire was contained by around 05:30am, preventing further spread into surrounding areas.
Details shared by fire officials indicate that a significant response was mobilised to manage the incident.
Spokesperson Frank Forbay said the operation included five fire engines, three water tankers and 31 firefighters, supported by a Type 4 Incident Management Team (IMT4).
‘The fire spread into the reeds next to the informal settlement, but by 05:30 the fire was contained,’ Forbay stated.
While the main blaze was brought under control early in the morning, firefighters remained on scene to prevent flare-ups.
‘Currently there are still two fire engines on scene, monitoring the area of reeds for flare-ups,’ he added.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident.
Officials have not yet determined what sparked the blaze.
‘The cause of the fire is unknown,’ Forbay said.
