In a dramatic display of teamwork and quick action, rescuers successfully aided two hikers in separate incidents across the Western Cape this past Sunday, Cape {town} Etc reports.
First, an 83-year-old British hiker was saved after collapsing from dehydration and heat exhaustion while hiking with a small group on a peak between Hermanus and Stanford.
According to Western Cape Search and Rescue (WSAR) spokesperson David Nel, a small rescue team, including a paramedic from the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness Emergency Medical Services (EMS), was swiftly flown to the scene of the emergency.
‘The hiker was treated for dehydration and heat exhaustion, then flown to a nearby landing zone where an ambulance transported him to hospital. This incident was concluded at 1:09pm,’ said Nel.
While the Overberg teams were managing this urgent situation, another call for help was raised from the breathtaking yet rugged Witels hiking trail near Ceres.
In the midst of a multi-day trek through steep canyons and rocky pathways, a 24-year-old hiker suffered an ankle injury on day four of his expedition. Realising they needed assistance, six members of his group climbed to a higher point to find cell phone reception, urgently contacting emergency services via the number 021 937 0300.

Responding to the distress call, a small team aboard the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS/Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter located the injured hiker and his companion. However, the challenging terrain hindered direct access to the duo.
Rescuers were lowered to a nearby point and made the trek on foot to reach them.
The injured hiker received treatment on-site before both he and his companion were hoisted into the helicopter for a safe flight to a nearby landing zone. This second incident concluded at 5pm on the same day.
‘Our sincere thanks to all the rescue teams involved in Sunday’s operations. Your expertise and dedication ensured both hikers received timely care. We wish them a full and speedy recovery,’ expressed Nel.
