Cape Town is a city that is both health and environmentally conscious, and a new transportation service launching in early 2020 will allow locals to travel the city in the open air, without worrying about carbon emissions. Electric scooter and bike rental company Lime is launching a fleet of scooters throughout the Mother City.

“Cape Town is helping lead the way forward on technology and innovation in Africa, and we’re excited to be a part of that story,” said Wayne Ting, global head of operations and strategy at Lime, in a statement. “Our mission is to improve urban living through sustainable, affordable transportation, and we’re looking forward to extending meaningful mobility access and reduced carbon emissions to South Africans living in and travelling to Cape Town.”

The fleet of scooters will be available for rental at privately-owned locations across the city, and there is also an app available to use. The app works similarly to the Uber app, and will allow users to hire dock-free rental bikes, e-assist bikes and electric scooters.

Users can also scan a barcode on the scooter to activate it and are able to make payments directly through their app. The vehicles also have built-in trackers meaning it is easy to see where the closest vehicle is. This service is restricted to the Cape Town CBD.
