A Strand Beach drowning was reported at about 09:35 on New Year’s Day when a woman alerted rescue crews to a swimmer in trouble, city lifeguards and NSRI crews later confirmed, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to The South African“A 38-year-old man has drowned at Strand Beach in the Western Cape,” local reporting said, placing readers at the scene as rescue teams raced along the shoreline.
NSRI Gordon’s Bay alerted the City of Cape Town water rescue network and lifeguards from the Strand Surf Lifesaving Club joined the search.
Rescue craft deployed and lifeguards entered the surf while the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre reviewed CCTV to narrow the search area.
Shortly afterwards a man was located floating in the surf zone and recovered to the beach, where CPR began.
Emergency services including Western Cape Government Health EMS, ER24, GB Med, Cape Town Fire and Rescue, disaster teams and SAPS joined resuscitation efforts on the sand.
Paramedics declared the man deceased at the scene; his body was handed to SAPS and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services and an inquest docket was opened.
Local responders extend condolences to family and friends. The incident underlines the importance of swimming in designated areas and remaining vigilant of surf conditions as holiday crowds return to False Bay beaches.
