A mother from Elsies River was shot and killed on Monday, October 4 after she had gone to a nearby shop to buy eggs. According to reports, the 37-year-old Helesene Charles’ body was discovered by community members with a single shot to the face.
Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi told IOL that the incident took place on 12th Avenue in Leonsdale. Swartbooi says the victim was declared dead on the scene by the medical personnel.
“The unknown suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested. The motive for the attack is unknown,” Swartbooi said.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, two suspects were arrested after police found two homemade zip guns in their possession. Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, says members of the crime prevention unit were conducting stop and search operations in Basboom Street when they stopped a vehicle and searched the occupants.
Van Wyk says the two suspects, aged 28 and 30, were found with the zip guns along with ammunition. They are expected to appear in court soon.
