Tokai residents are excited as a caracal was seen in the forest earlier today. Caracals, like all cat species, are naturally shy and rarely seen. The Facebook page Urban Caracal Project posted a video recorded by a member, showing the feline disappearing into the veld. The group also encouraged members to report any sightings.

In December 2019, the group also posted information about the death of a young male caracal, who reportedly ate rat poison.

These animals are shy, nocturnal creatures but sightings have steadily increased. This could possibly be a result of human population increase and loss of habitat due to developments, which force the animals out of their natural habitat.
