Following a devastating fire that left its future uncertain, Epping’s beloved Dozens Bakery is set to open its doors once more.
Known for its rich history of providing quality baked goods at affordable prices for over 30 years, the bakery has long been a cornerstone of community life in Epping.
Earlier this week, owner Steve van Aardt announced that the rebuilding and renovation process is drawing to a close, paving the way for a new chapter for the cherished establishment after last year’s massive fire ravaged the bakery shop.
In an exclusive conversation with Cape {town} Etc, Van Aardt expressed his overwhelming gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community following their reopening announcement.
‘I am however just completely overwhelmed by the number of positive comments to our reopening post, and it really excites me for the future,’ he said.
‘We cannot wait to get up and running and we’re really hoping and praying that all our customers will come back and support us.’

The bakery, which has weathered the storm of the last year, is approaching its reopening with cautious optimism.
‘We are so happy that we will be able to play a part in the community again and cannot wait to start baking. It is not going to be an easy road forward as we have to start much smaller than what we used to be, but we are positive and committed to giving our customers the same quality and good prices that we used to,’ Van Aardt explained.
While the exact reopening date remains uncertain, Van Aardt hinted that it could be as early as December this year or January next year, with a firm commitment to being operational by February 2026.
‘To say we are excited is an understatement. Our shop will be bigger and better than before. We just hope that all our wonderful customers will be back. We’ve missed you so much and cannot wait to see you all again soon. Here are a few pics and videos of the current building process,’ he added, showcasing the journey of recovery through visual updates.
