A wave of disbelief has gripped Stellenbosch following the fatal shooting of former deputy mayor Nyandiso Jindela, who was gunned down in Kayamandi on Monday, 9 June.
Jindela, known for his years of service to the community, was reportedly attacked in a brazen act of violence that has left locals stunned and demanding answers, as News24 reports. The motive for the killing remains unclear at this stage, and police have not yet confirmed any arrests.
The Stellenbosch Municipality expressed its grief and shock in an official statement shared via social media, saying, ‘Mr Jindela was a former Councillor who served the community with distinction, including in the role of Deputy Mayor.’ Authorities added that the municipality is cooperating fully with the police as investigations continue.
Kayamandi, a township just outside the centre of Stellenbosch, has seen sporadic incidents of violence over the years, and this latest killing has once again sparked concerns around safety and policing in the area.
Local community leaders have urged anyone with information to come forward, and tributes have continued to pour in from residents, colleagues and local organisations.
The municipality said in its statement: ‘We extend our deepest condolences to Mr Jindela’s family and loved ones during this horrific time.’
As of Tuesday morning, no further updates had been issued by the SAPS. Anyone with leads is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
