Residents of selected Cape Town areas are being alerted to planned water supply disruptions today as the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate undertakes crucial infrastructure maintenance work, reports Cape {town} Etc.
This proactive effort aims to upgrade and enhance the City’s water systems, ensuring a reliable future water supply.
Water supply disruptions and affected areas
The planned maintenance will take place in the following locations:
- Govan Mbeki Drive – Lansdowne/Hanover Park: Water supply to areas along Govan Mbeki Drive, including Wetton Circle and Hanover Park Avenue, will be interrupted from 8am until 6pm. Key locations affected include the Lansdowne Corner Shopping Mall, Astron Service Station, and Epilepsy SA near Fynn Close. The disruption is necessary to connect a newly installed pipeline to the existing water infrastructure, facilitating the relocation of a water main due to the ongoing IRT road construction project.
- Wynberg: A large portion of the Wynberg area will experience a water supply shut-off from 8am to 5pm. During this time, the maintenance team will replace a defective valve on the 225mm water main and carry out necessary pipeline connections on Main Road, Wynberg.
How residents can prepare
Residents are strongly advised to prepare in advance for the disruptions by storing sufficient water for their needs. Water should be stored in clean, sealed containers to ensure its safety. The City also recommends keeping taps closed to prevent any potential water damage when service is restored.
For those impacted by the disruptions, the City has provided the following tips for preparation:
- Store adequate water in advance in clean, sealed containers.
- Keep taps closed during the disruption to avoid potential water loss or damage when supply is resumed.
- Expect possible discolouration or cloudiness in the water when the supply is restored. This is caused by trapped air in the pipes and will clear up once the water has settled.
Ongoing maintenance and infrastructure upgrades
This maintenance is part of the City’s ongoing infrastructure upgrade programme, designed to improve the quality and reliability of water services across Cape Town. The City emphasises that these planned disruptions are necessary to reduce unaccounted-for water and maintain an efficient, reliable supply for residents.
