Data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) seemingly indicates that the petrol price hike intended for March 2025 will be much smaller than expected.
However, as a result of unstable global markets, the possibility of a stark price hike remains.
According to data provided by the CEF, Diesel has shown a smaller increase than expected and there is a possibility of a slight price cut.
The expected fuel prices for March 2025 are as follows:
- Petrol 93: increase of 23 cents per litre
- Petrol 95: increase of 10 cents per litre
- Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): increase of 4 cents per litre
- Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): decrease of 3 cents per litre
- Illuminating paraffin: increase of 16 cents per litre
Data provided by the CEF does not allow for an exact determination of the expected petrol price in March, as the daily snapshots provided by CEF are not entirely predictive of the final fuel price adjustments.
The final petrol prices for March 2025 will be announced by the Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources a few days prior to its expected date of implementation.
However, while the amounts projected by the CEF are subject to change and influenced by various factors such as slate levy adjustments and retail margins, they are an apt projection of expected increases.
According to BusinessTech, oil markets have been subject to the decisions made by President Trump and often suffer as a result of his policies and political decisions. The decisions taken by Trump have global impacts in various markets and as such, South African petrol prices face a measure of unpredictability.
