South Africans are being urged to stay alert after a new scam began circulating in which criminals pretend to represent Telkom and falsely tell people they’ve won a car.
The scheme centres around claims linked to the company’s recent Summer Campaign, with victims being informed they are prize winners. However, the catch comes when fraudsters demand a payment to ‘release’ or secure the vehicle, a move that has been flagged as entirely fake.
Telkom has made it clear that it does not ask customers to pay any fees, deposits or purchase vouchers in order to receive prizes. Any request for money, sensitive banking details, PINs or one-time passwords should immediately raise red flags.
The company also confirmed that the Summer Campaign officially came to an end on 31 January 2026, with all prizes already awarded. Five winners received vehicles as part of the promotion, and there are no additional giveaways connected to that campaign.

Customers are being reminded that all legitimate prize notifications are sent through official Telkom communication channels only, such as verified SMS codes, recognised email domains or the My Telkom app. Any unexpected message, call or link claiming a prize should be treated with caution.
To avoid falling victim, people are encouraged not to share personal or financial information, avoid clicking on suspicious links and stop engaging with any communication that seems questionable. If in doubt, it’s advised to verify directly through official Telkom platforms or contact customer care.
Authorities are also encouraging anyone who encounters these scams to report them, as the tactic continues to target unsuspecting individuals hoping to claim what appears to be a major prize.
