City officials have issued a public warning after false information circulated online claiming that contract work paying R13 000 per month was available at the Mitchells Plain cleansing depot.
The misinformation led to a large number of people travelling to the facility under the impression that recruitment was taking place.
The City of Cape Town has since confirmed that the notice is fake and that no contract opportunity or recruitment process exists at the depot.
In a statement, the City said it is investigating the source of the message and urged residents not to travel to municipal facilities based on unverified job offers. Officials stressed that the City does not recruit workers through WhatsApp messages, flyers or word of mouth.
Residents have also been reminded to be cautious of messages promising guaranteed employment, fixed monthly payments or instructions to report to depots without going through a formal application process.
The City further emphasised that it never charges a fee to apply for jobs, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) opportunities or contracts, warning that any request for payment is a clear red flag.
To help curb the spread of similar scams, residents are encouraged to take simple steps when encountering suspicious job adverts.
These include verifying vacancies directly on the City’s official website, avoiding the sharing of unverified messages and reporting suspected scams through the official contact channels listed on www.capetown.gov.za.
The City said it regrets the confusion and inconvenience caused by the fake notice and appealed to the public to rely only on official communication channels to prevent further misinformation from spreading.
