Condolences have begun pouring in since it emerged that Doctor Monty Brink passed away after collapsing during the Cape Town Cycle Tour. A gynaecologist beloved by many, Brink’s Facebook page has been flooded by messages from grateful and saddened patients.

Race organisers issued a statement after the news broke that Brink, who had not yet been identified at the time of his passing, collapsed during the 41st Cycle Tour. “It is with deep regret that the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust confirms that a participant passed away during the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour, after collapsing at Smitswinkel Bay,” David Bellairs, Marketing, Media and Sponsorship Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, said on Sunday. “Our sincere condolences go out to his family. We are respecting the family’s wishes and not releasing any further personal details at this point.”

A memorial service will be held for Brink on Saturday, March 16, and will begin at 3pm at the Connect Church on 136 Ladies Mile Road Meadowridge.

The family has requested that a donation be made to the Zoe Project, which supports a midwife unit in Retreat, instead of bringing flowers to the memorial.
